What authors need

A Web Site:

One thing every author needs is to promote his/her book. The one way you must never overlook is to have a web site telling about your book and preferable selling it there. This can be one of the cheapest investments you will make but without it, in today's market, you are dead in the water.

Pay Pal, www.paypal.com, is an easy way to collect the price of your book online. You open an account for free.  They charge a small fee for each time you receive money. You are not charged anything to send money to someone. It is quick, safe and reputable.  I usually keep a little money sitting in my Pay Pal account as they pay a pretty fair dividend.

At the very least have a link on you site to Amazon or Barnes and Noble’s page for you book. Web sites can be built without any fancy programs. I still  use Front Page even though Microsoft had discontinued it.  It is the best web building program I have found. It’s a little tricky to master but there are lots of books to help you learn it. You do not need any HTML to use it. However, most free hosts (and paid ones) have site builder tools that you can use to build on site. There are many good hosts that will work for you. I have used Netfirms Web Hosting and have been very happy with them. The one thing I do recommend is that you buy a domain name that relates to you or your book name. Go Daddy, www.GoDaddy.com , is the cheapest place I have found so far. They sell names for about $9.99 per year some like .us even cheaper. When you year is up they send out reminders. I have also used them for years and have never had a problem. Both GoDaddy and Netfirms respond when you email for help. With a domain name, you can move your site anywhere and still have the same name.

Meta Tags and Keywords are important to helping your site get found by search engines. They sound scary but really are not too difficult.

www.addme.com is a good source of information about Mets Tags and keywords.

Keywords are the building blocks of the Meta Tag. In fact a Meta Tag is just a group of keywords separated by commas that are accessed by search engines whey they are assessing your site. The better your choice of key words, the better chance of having your site rank high with the search engines and then when someone types a keyword into a search engine your site will pop up. The ultimate goal is to rank in the top ten of a search engine. These ratings fluctuate daily. The same keyword typed into Google today might bring up a different set of sites than it did yesterday.

Keywords are based on the fact that there are a lot of different ways to say the same thing for example if you were looking for an independent book publisher for a book on boats, you might type in “boats” Add me gives the following alternatives and how many people are using them as compared to just the one word. boats 18017 used boats 12991 used boat sales 6295 fishing boats 4145 boat sales 4135 boats for sale 2932 pontoon boat 2651 classified boats 2175 boat 1527 boat trader 1473 used boat prices 1259 pontoon boats 1227 boat parts 1204

By using a wise combination of words describing your site you raise odds of search engines picking you site when one of these words are typed into it.

A Meta Tag is a combination of several of these keywords placed on your site in the HTML version. Add Me has a free Meta Tag generator. The way it works is you type in the name, description and a few keywords describing your site and the generator provides you with an HTML meta tag.

Just copy and paste the code above into your webpage HTML code, at the top , right after the <html> tag. If there is no <html> tag at the top of your document add one.

You really don’t need to know HTML. Just put it in using the file manager or if you use frontpage use the HTML page.

Another helpful site is www.sitepronews.com/ They also have Meta Tag generators and other helpful web tools.

Both of them have free submission sites, which we allow you to send your site to search engine robots.
