Black Lily: Have No Mercy III

Beginning of Chapter One

 

PRESENT

As he sat laden with guilt, the tears in Charley’s eyes reflected the sadness in his heart. The loss of two women he had once cared for, weighed heavy on his shoulders. Attempting to stay strong and hide his outward grief, he kept his focus on the table in front of him. Words of apprehension ricocheted off the walls of the interview room, penetrating his mind.

"Charles Monroe Sutton, I’m placing you under arrest for vehicular homicide. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. If you choose to answer questions now, you can stop at any time. Do you understand your rights?"

The time had come for Charley to unburden his heart and admit the truth. Rubbing his scruffy beard, Charley proposed, "I understand and I’ll confess to the whole disgusting scheme if it will get me a lesser time behind bars."

"In case you’re not aware of the laws, you have the right to one telephone call if you want to call an attorney."

"If it’s all the same to you, I’ll pass on the phone call and let the court appoint me a mouthpiece. No sense in tossing away good money on a guilty man…"
